Horse Hair Pottery These pots are burnished and coated with a porcelain slip then highly polished and fired in an electric kiln to 1580 degrees. After the bisque firing they are glazed on the insides and rims and fired again in a gas kiln to 2000 degrees-they are taken out of the kiln with tongs and allowed to cool to approximately 1600 degrees, at this point I lay on the horse hair strands which carbonize on the pots to form the designs. After cooling they are coated with an acrylic wax to protect the finish. The last step is adding the wire wrap, horse hair tassels and other decorations. |
