THE ART OF RAKU The Pot is thrown on the potters wheel, then trimmed and carved. When the pot is bone dry it is fired in an electric kiln to about 1600 degrees. It is then glazed with a copper bearing formula. The pot is then fired for the second time in a gas kiln to 1900 degrees. When the pot has gotten to temperature it is pulled out of the kiln with tongs and placed in a bed of shredded paper. The heat of the pot immediately ignites the paper. After about 10 seconds the pot is covered with a metal can and is smoked for approximately 20 minutes. This removes all the air and allows the copper luster to form. The pot is then removed from the pit and plunged into water. This sets the color. These pieces are not intended to be used for liquids. If using it for a potted plant always put in a liner. Susan |
